Topology and Energetics of Metal-Encapsulating Si Fullerene-Like Cage Clusters

چکیده
On the basis of a topological discussion as well as an ab initio calculation, we show that it is possible to construct a fullerene-like Si cage by doping of a transition metal atom. The cage is a simple 3-polytope which maximizes the number of its inner diagonals close to the metal atom. Our topological argument also reveals how closely the structure of the fullerene-like Si cages studied is related to that of fullerenes themselves. PACS numbers: Typeset using REVTEX

M4 @Si28 (M=Al,Ga): metal-encapsulated tetrahedral silicon fullerene.
It is known that silicon fullerenes cannot maintain perfect cage structures like carbon fullerenes. Previous density-functional theory calculations have shown that even with encapsulated species, nearly all endohedral silicon fullerenes exhibit highly puckered cage structures in comparison with their carbon counterparts. In this work, we present theoretical evidences that the tetrahedral fuller...
متن کاملFormation of metal-encapsulating Si cage clusters.
We report the formation of a series of metal-containing hydrogenated silicon clusters using an ion trap. Mass analyses reveal that many types of transition metal ions M(+) ( M = Hf, Ta, W, Re, Ir, etc.) react with silane (SiH4) to form dehydrogenated MSi( +)(n) cluster ions ( n = 14, 13, 12, 11, 9, respectively) as an end product, indicating that the metal atom is endohedral and stabilizes the ...
متن کاملStabilization of Si-based cage clusters and nanotubes by encapsulation of transition metal atoms
The encapsulation of metal atoms within Si-based cage clusters leads to stable metal-encapsulated Si cage clusters (Si-cc). The present work investigates the effect of encapsulation of transition metal atoms (TMAs). We show that the filling factor of the d-band of the TMA is the dominant factor determining the structural configuration of the Si-cc. This results in a contrasting bonding and magn...
متن کاملA systematic study of rare gas atoms encapsulated in small fullerenes using dispersion corrected density functional theory
The most stable fullerene structures from C20 to C60 are chosen to study the energetics and geometrical consequences of encapsulating the rare gas elements He, Ne, or Ar inside the fullerene cage using dispersion corrected density functional theory. An exponential increase in stability is found with increasing number of carbon atoms. A similar exponential law is found for the volume expansion o...
متن کاملStructures and relative stability of medium- and large-sized silicon clusters. VI. Fullerene cage motifs for low-lying clusters Si(39), Si(40), Si(50), Si(60), Si(70), and Si(80).
We performed a constrained search, combined with density-functional theory optimization, of low-energy geometric structures of silicon clusters Si(39), Si(40), Si(50), Si(60), Si(70), and Si(80). We used fullerene cages as structural motifs to construct initial configurations of endohedral fullerene structures. For Si(39), we examined six endohedral fullerene structures using all six homolog C(...
